As expected, this year's Apple event introduced a significant redesign for the company's beloved smartphone line. Gone are the boxy lines and slender proportions of the iPhone 5 and 5s, in favor of a curvier silhouette that better matches the iPad Air and iPad mini. But the big news here is all about size. With the larger iPhone 6 and the supersized iPhone 6 Plus, Apple is ready to contend with the growing stable of big-screen Android phones.
Now equipped with a 4.7-inch LCD, the iPhone 6 is a much closer match for Android flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8). It's still not a full-HD panel, but the 1,334-by-750-pixel display boasts a Retina-approved 326 pixels per inch. The 4.7-inch size shows some restraint on Apple's part, ensuring the device will be easier to use with one hand, like last year's Motorola Moto X.
Starting at the same $199 price as always, Apple fans can now enjoy more iPhone than ever before. Inside is Apple's latest A8 system-on-a-chip, M8 motion coprocessor, and a new NFC radio for Apple's wireless payment system, Apple Pay. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner is still here, while the camera gets some improvements too. Also onboard is Apple's latest iOS 8 software.
The larger dimensions mean it'll be tougher for some to keep a secure grip on their new iPhones. And there's now more breakable glass on front than ever. You know what that means—if you want to protect your shiny new smartphone, you'd do well to grab a protective case. And even if you're more sure-handed, cases offer a way to personalize the iPhone 6, which already sold four million units during the first night of presales.
Luckily, case options abound when you own an iPhone. We've rounded up some of our favorite cases for the new iPhone 6 here, so peruse the slideshow to find your match. And check back for updates, as we're sure more cases will crop up in the coming months following the iPhone's release.
